Why full orchestra instead of string orchestra?
Utah is blessed with a rich participation in school orchestras. These ensembles give most students a great opportunity to perform string orchestra works. However, it is difficult for school groups to perform as a full orchestral ensemble during the school year. With such a rich heritage and large selection of full orchestra music available, the Utah Valley Youth Symphony is dedicated to helping students experience this exciting genre of music.
Do I need to play in my school band or orchestra?
AKA— Do I want free rehearsal/practice/tutoring during the school day to improve my skills? All students with the opportunity/ability to participate in a school music ensemble should absolutely be involved in their school programs. UVYSO is an enhancement of the traditional school program—NOT a SUBSTITUTION! Yes, participate!
Do I need a private teacher?
A private teacher is not required for membership in UVYSO. However, it is STRONGLY recommended. Private teachers are your resource for answering questions, developing technique, and increasing motivation. It is your individual ability—learned in lessons and school—that allows your participation in UVYSO to be rewarding and fun. If you need assistance finding a private teacher, please let us know. We would love to help you find an experienced and fully qualified private teacher in your area.
