Please arrive 10-15 before your designated in-person audition time. A space will be available for students to warm up prior to their audition. Students may play with or without accompaniment. Memorization is not required nor expected.
Students who come to in-person audition without prior completion of the Application Form will be auditioned in available slots on a first come-first served basis and will be asked to complete the Application form online on Acceptd on site.
What do I bring to my audition?
Everyone: your instrument or instruments (if you audition on more than one), your music.
Percussionists–bring sticks/mallets and a pad or a snare to Summerhays. If you audition at 3410 Canyon Rd, we can provide you with either timpani or a snare or bass drum as well as sticks/mallets.
Purpose of the Auditions:
The chief goal of auditions is for you to show your best current level of playing and for the conductors to be able to advise on the best possible experience for you (this may involve which part you play).
Another important purpose is for the directors to be able to determine what repertoire to choose to be able to use original instrumentation and involve all musicians. We tend to study and perform advanced repertoire.
If you are a multi-instrumentalist and want to be involved on multiple instruments, please let that be known on your form. We have had students play trombone parts in pieces that include trombones and percussion in others, as they play percussion too.
What to prepare:
A minor and major scale of your choice (at least 2 octaves, 3 recommended, if that’s what you already do. Strings–slurs in groups 2, 3, 4 or 6 notes are fine. Reasonably flowing tempo). More advanced woodwinds and brass–prepare a chromatic scale too.
A short piece or a fragment of a piece (or fragments of two short pieces) that best represents your current level of playing. This could be a piece you recently performed (whether you studied it privately with a teacher or in your school ensemble) or a piece which you are currently studying, such as solo Bach, a movement of a concerto or a concert piece. Something fast, something slow. Fragments of contrasting characters are desirable.
Returning Members:
No audition is required for returning members.
Please note that UVYSO musicians are encouraged and expected to participate in ensembles within the music programs at their schools. UVYSO musicians commit to UVYSO weekly rehearsals and concerts for the entire season. We encourage students to hone their skills under the tutelage of private teachers.
